Diagnostic features for Windows and Linux
Depending on the selected operating system, admin-tools runs a defined set of checks on a Windows or Linux system and writes the output to a log file. That log file is parsed and presented grouped by topic. The administrator decides in advance which checks run and which targets are queried; the generated Windows or Linux diagnostic tool contains the required commands.
Windows system information
Operating system and build, system type, manufacturer, model, BIOS version, system locale and memory. Security-relevant details such as secure boot, DMA protection and virtualization-based security are included, as are running processes and installed drivers. This clarifies up front whether the device and patch level are what you expected.
Network adapters and IP configuration
Every installed adapter with connection name, description, status, physical address and link speed. For each adapter the IP addresses, subnet, default gateway, DHCP status, DHCP server and configured DNS servers are captured. A disconnected adapter or an unexpected APIPA address becomes visible immediately.
Ping, traceroute and reachability
Ping checks with packets sent and received, packet loss in percent and minimum, average and maximum response time. Traceroute shows the path to the target hop by hop, including timeouts. Ping and traceroute targets are freely configurable, so internal servers, terminal servers or a site gateway can be tested as well.
DNS and local network information
DNS name resolution for freely chosen host names, the local DNS cache and the ARP table with neighbours in the same segment. The Windows proxy configuration and mapped drives are captured as well. This cleanly separates name resolution problems from connectivity problems.
Routing and active connections
The routing table of the workstation with destination networks, interfaces and metrics, plus the active network connections. Incorrect static routes, an additional VPN interface or an unexpectedly active connection become apparent.
Wi-Fi diagnostics
For the active Wi-Fi connection the interface, adapter, driver and driver date, SSID and profile, radio type, frequency band, channel, signal strength, authentication and encryption are read. Weak signal, a 2.4 GHz fallback or an outdated Wi-Fi driver becomes documented rather than assumed.
Wi-Fi environment and saved profiles
All Wi-Fi networks visible to the device with SSID, band, channel, signal strength and encryption, plus the names of the locally saved Wi-Fi profiles. Channel overlap, foreign networks on the same channel and outdated profiles can be assessed at the user’s location.
Requirements and workflow
The diagnosis requires no installation. The intended checks are generally designed for standard Windows-user rights; individual results may nevertheless be limited by the Windows version, configuration, policies or available permissions. The user starts the batch file, the checks run one after another with a progress display, and the result is either transferred automatically over HTTPS or kept locally for a manual upload. Results are matched to the corresponding request using an individual token, which is checked against a stored SHA-256 hash for server-side verification and assignment. The upload token is also part of the generated diagnostic log file and may be stored with that file and in the raw log on the server.
